Glad you’re feeling better Dana. I’m in the middle of some health problems at the moment, hopefully will clear up soon as well.

In  that case I think it would count as personal advertising. I'm sure that would be against company rules

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/apr/23/indonesian-submarine-missing-search-rescuers-unidentified-object-found-indonesia-navy-kri-nanggala-402

The Indonesian navy believes the submarine sank to a depth of 600-700m (2,000-2,300ft) – three times greater than the depth at which pressure would begin to crush the vessel. Ahn Guk-hyeon, an official from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, which refitted the vessel in 2009-2012, said the submarine would collapse if it goes deeper than around 200m. He said his company upgraded much of the submarine’s internal structures and systems but lacked recent information about the vessel. Frank Owen, secretary of the Submarine Institute of Australia, also said the submarine could be at too great a depth for a rescue team to operate. “Most rescue systems are really only rated to about 600m (1,970 feet),” he said. “They can go deeper than that because they will have a safety margin built into the design, but the pumps and other systems that are associated with that may not have the capacity to operate. So they can survive at that depth, but not necessarily operate.” Owen, a former submariner who developed an Australian submarine rescue system, said the Indonesian vessel was not fitted with a rescue seat around an escape hatch designed for underwater rescues. He said a rescue submarine would make a waterproof connection to a disabled submarine with a so-called skirt fitted over the rescue seat so that the hatch can be opened without the stricken vessel filling with water. Owen said the submarine could be recovered from 500m without any damage but could not say if it would have imploded at 700m.

Apparently the Indonesian submarine was forty years old. It dived down to 850 metres, when it was only designed to withstand the pressure of 500 metres.

I've found out that because I got it second-hand it had already (obviously) been associated with another Apple ID, namely that of the previous owner. So, guess what? It tells me I have to wait THREE MONTHS before I can put my own music on it. This is absolutely hilarious. I dd a hard factory reset on the phone, but I guess they're picking up the old Apple ID from the EMEI code which uniquely identifies all phones. The only good thing about that is I've signed up for a free 3 month trial of iTunes, so I'll cancel that as soon as I get my own music on.

The use of facial recognition for surveillance, or algorithms that manipulate human behaviour, will be banned under proposed EU regulations on artificial intelligence. The wide-ranging proposals, which were leaked ahead of their official publication, also promised tough new rules for what they deem high-risk AI.That includes algorithms used by the police and in recruitment.Experts said the rules were vague and contained loopholes. The use of AI in the military is exempt, as are systems used by authorities in order to safeguard public security. The suggested list of banned AI systems includes:

  • those designed or used in a manner that manipulates human behaviour, opinions or decisions ...causing a person to behave, form an opinion or take a decision to their detriment
  • AI systems used for indiscriminate surveillance applied in a generalised manner
  • AI systems used for social scoring
  • those that exploit information or predictions and a person or group of persons in order to target their vulnerabilities

I think it's good that Europe is leading the way here. The UK has become a surveillance society already, how's it like in the States? I imagine Russia  and China are embracing all this spy technology as well.

After much shenanigans I’ve got my iPhone up and running. It’s pretty sweet so far. The only thing is I haven’t worked out how to get my music on it. Might have to ring Apple Support about it.

Well I got my new iPhone but I can't use it yet. I had an Apple ID about three years ago that I set up with TFA (Two Factor Authentication), and guess what, of course I no longer have access to that mobile number anymore. I went to https://iforgot.apple.com to try to recover my account, and they said it would be THIRTEEN FREAKING DAYS before I could update my new mobile number on my account. Jesus. So on Monday I'm going to go down the Apple Store with all my documentation and ask them very nicely if they will unlock my account.

In my earlier years I used to be very sexist and misogynistic. In recent years I have tried to become more enlightened, but I am still a little unreconstructed. And yes, I think both those terms are very bad traits which we should aim to consign to the history books.

We've been on iphone from the start. What was frustrating about the Android experience?

The user experience is dreadful. Nothing is properly integrated between apps in an intuitive way. All the services are infected with Google, and I ended up disabling them all. If you do that it warns that your phone may become unstable, but I just couldn't live with them. Android is the same quality of user experience as Microsoft Windows, which is to say not a lot.

A second-hand 256GB XR model. It's winging it's way from eBay to me as we speak. I've never really used iPhones before, but I'm so fed up with Android phones that I thought I'd make the leap to Apple. Anyone have positive experiences from switching?

I watched Frederico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) last weekend.

It's an absolutely brilliant old classic about the decadent rich in Rome. I would highly recommend it.

I don't know anything about it, but I am skeptical that outsourcing parts of the programming was the problem.  One thing we have learned during this pandemic is that for many information based jobs, your physical location doesn't matter.  If you can work remotely from across town, you can also work remotely from Mumbai at the going wages for Mumbai.  The key for a big organization with tons of people on a team is to have good management to coordinate things.

You look at a company like Tesla, and it sounds like they are getting the programming right.  They somehow manage their teams well in a way that Boeing doesn't.

As I understand it, the planes fell out of the sky due to faulty software. If Boeing had had a professional well-paid and motivated in-house team where they could properly monitor quality control and liaise with the aeronautical engineers maybe those tragedies wouldn't have happened.
