Wood Cars

Not cars made of wood, but run on wood.
In a book I am reading about WW2 in France, due to the shortage of gasoline and other liquid fuels, cars and trucks were converted to run on wood and coal.
Many, many cars and trucks in fact and I didn't know squat about them.
A couple of places to correct that:

COAL AND WOOD BURNING VEHICLES OF WWII (robertsarmory.com)

Re: Wood Cars

I'd seen pictures of taxi cab in Europe right after the war with huge balloons/bags on the roof running on some kind of gas, probably coal gas. Probably because taxi cabs are on the move a lot it was easier to generate the gas at the terminal and go fill up rather than doing on the car.
