I highly recommend the series.  Ironically, it is primarily made up of public domain characters already, but he's putting these particular versions of those characters into the public domain as well.

But DC is fighting him on it, so what he's actually doing is trying to set up a "let's you and them fight" situation, where someone who can afford to go up against DC does so, since he can't.
