TV

The first TV show I saw was September 23rd, 1952.
Friends of my folks bought one because they were people who wanted the latest and greatest, first among peers, of everything.
I got the feeling they were more into sharing than showing off though, and we were invited to watch the Rocky Marciano - Joe Walcott title fight.
It was long, the screen was small, and there were 10 people so couldn’t get that close... I got bored.

TV had been going on for awhile, starting in the 1920s and making improvements through the 1930s/40s it was ready for prime time by 1950.
Expensive, small screen, interference snow and wiggles, limited programming, but people were enthralled. It grew like crazy.
But all those broadcast signals also went up as well as out... theoretically forever.

You’d have to be 45 light years out to see the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, and 70 light years to see the first broadcast baseball game.
But only 10 light years to see the Sopranos and Sponge Bob Squarepants.
Of course a light year is 6 Trillion miles or 9.7 Trillion kilometers, so you'd need a wormhole to catch up with those broadcasts. But wow, Sponge Bob!

Re: TV

First color TV was maybe 1956 or 8.  They were all impressed.  I remember my response.  What's the big deal?  It's only color.  I was not impressed at the time.  Had no idea what a major accomplishment that was.

Re: TV

I said so what to color until I saw one... in the house of the same couple where I first saw TV, only it was in FL instead of MA this time.
