I used to think poorly of the Soviets for getting bogged down in Afghanistan for so long.  Idiots.

Re: US to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021.

Apparently for some reason/reasons it's difficult to do safely.
I don't understand it any more than that whole clusterfuck of a region.
Remember the whole fields full of materiels the Russians left behind, I think that's part of the problem.

Re: US to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021.

Never forget why this war was lost.  We discussed it here extensively maybe 18 year ago.  No phase four planning.  Failure to do so in both Afghanistan and in Mission Accomplished meant massive harm to the American economy due to wars that continued forever.

Nothing new.  It (and the other major violations) were clearly defined by Tse Sung in his book "Art of War" some 2,500 years ago.

What did the idiot Gen William Westmoreland do in Nam.  He also said those concept did not apply in Nam.  So he also violated them resulting in 50,000 dead Americans for no purpose.

America, in the Paris Peace talks, threw the S Vietnam government under the bus. And surrendered.  America is doing it again to the Afghan government.  Deja Vue Nam.

This.  But there's not much money left in that pit, so we're leaving.

We've got Russians crowding the Ukraine, I think the defense industry is gonna be fine.

The defense industry always makes money...But the real cabbage rolls in when ordnance is being expended.

Ongoing many times faster than what happened (was learned) in Nam.  Reasons were made obvious by what Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Feith did to waste 5,000 American servicemen.  No Phase Four planning.

Taliban has won the war - defeated America.  Because our leaders (just like William Westmoreland) were so ignorant. Demonstrated so much contempt for the American serviceman.

We are out of there.  Sort of.
Military is still saying just a little longer, we can co this.
Mercenaries are following their riches home.
Imagine Afghanis in control of Afghanistan. Gasp.
The Taliban is the VC without an NVA.
And there won't a boat lift for the ones that the West leaves behind this time.

Pentagon were not the people who abandoned Afghanistan in 2002-2003.  No phase four planning, as one bluntly posted in the Cellar back then, is why this is happening.  Our evil leaders so wanted to 'Peral Harbor' Saddam as to make the eventual defeat in Afghanistan a forgone conclusion.

Absolutely amazing how some will be taught these concepts that long ago.  And still deny them.  The most critical part of winning a war occurs in months (or years) AFTER all conflict ends.

Even Patton noted this well understood concept after WWII.  If we did not restore that nation, then America would have been defeated in Germany.  And still some refuse to learn concepts well understood and documented some 2500 years ago.

"Nobody thought it would be this quick."
Hey, over here.  I did.
CIA and the dozen other "Intelligence services" missed 9-11, so we gave them a raise.
Must be time for another one.
Like all sore losers since the beginning of time, the US will now do everything possible to thwart any effort of the Talliban to effectively rule their country.
Biden actually has a chance here to show his mettle.

Yeah, I keep hearing talking heads say that, nonsense. Maura Liasson "forgot" to mention 8 years of Obama while spreading blame today. Fucking bullshit. Both parties own this. To Biden's credit he owned his piece this afternoon. Let's hope we get a decent percentage of the Afghans who helped us out of there. Right now I work with an ESL Vietnamese family and Bosnian family, next year it'll be Afghans I guess.

"Everyone mad at Biden" is all over the news. This is politics from the before-times.. picking an unavoidable problem to hurl at whoever is in office. I find it hard to believe that anyone still cares about the old "dog and pony show" after spending so much time being overwhelmed by real problems.

Intelligence agencies had a memo on George Jr's desk three weeks eariler that said Bin Laden was going to attack the US.  They said it would involve buildings or planes.  They got one thing wrong.  It was "buildings  AND  planes".  Anyone can read this in the 911 Commision report.

Or one need only watch network news (the honest ones) who showed Condi Rice stalling and refusing to even read the title of that memo.  When she finally did, a gasp in that hearing room was massive.  Everyone should know what this expression means.  "All lights were flashing red."  But our leaders (George Jr, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Feith, Wolfovitz) were so extremist as to even mock the honest people (ie Richard Clark) who were yelling warnings.

We were defeated in Afghanistan long ago because our political leaders (who also protected Saddam) were that dumb. By this point, an eight hour highway between Kabul and Kandahar was completely back in Taliban hands. The Surge was a desperate attempt to fight the war all over again.

Unfortunately damage was done.  Victory is measured only by land that is controlled.  That means the "hearts and minds" of the rural people (who control most of the land) must be earned.  But we had already screwed that up.  Those people no longer trusted Americans, NATO, and the surge.  And for good reason.  We keep putting dumb extremists (ie Bolton) in positions of power.   They even openly mocked Colin Powell.

So we spent $2 trillion and 2400 lives in another VietNam type war - for 20 years.  America was defeated long before Petraeus tried to correct that mistake.  Reality was clearly posted in the Cellar some 18 years ago.  And still some refuse to learn reality.

America was defeated in Vietnam, in Iraq, and in Afghanistan.  In each case, we did no phase four planning or other strategic mistakes.  In 2001, I was amazed how many in The Cellar did not even learn from, well, Deja Vue Nam.   We ignored concepts taught 2,500 years ago.  And will probably do it again in 30 years due to so many Americans who will not be moderates (educated).

We need to focus on sports ball but even that is politics now.

What's wrong with how we're leaving? The Taliban is taking over, which was inevitable, and they're doing it with minimal bloodshed, which was unexpected.

There will be plenty of bloodshed with them in charge, but that has nothing to do with how we leave.
