Taiwan's garbage men...

I don't hear anyone complaining about their garbage disposal rights being oppressed.

Re: History and the people who made it.

Eh... works great in a society where someone (presumably the matriarch) is always home. I guess if they came every single day instead of once a week it might work here.

Re: History and the people who made it.

11,000 miles in 10 months, 1100 miles a month, 275 miles a week, 39.3 miles a day, approximately.
Most months have more than 28 days, and I'm sure they had days off from driving forced or not.
But considering the picture is the road in NYC, you can imagine what the rest was like.

11000 miles RT NYC-SF?
Odometers have come a long way.

Re: History and the people who made it.

There wasn't any highways, there was barely roads, often tracts. Very few bridges, build a raft or look for a shallow ford, and good luck with that on the Mississippi, Missouri, and all the rivers. From Chicago you might have to go to Kansas City to get to Minneapolis but you'll have to ask along the way because they had no Trip-tiks, probably not even a decent map. No road signs when there's no roads. If REO put up the car and spare parts they probably wanted as much exposure as possible. This was not a race.

Re: History and the people who made it.

I'm really curious where they got gasoline along the way.  Or did it run on fried chicken grease?

Re: History and the people who made it.

Gasoline was scarce and shitty, I Believe most of the early pioneer travelers would get lamp fuel, which had migrated from whale oil to kerosene, from general stores and trading posts. It wasn't until a gasoline distribution network developed that the gasoline  powered cars started to dominate. Steam faded quickly because of inherent difficulty and danger. Electrics hung in until the electric starter eliminated cranking gas engines.

Man with books seeks people without books. One of the good guys in history.
Although we don't know if he kicked puppies and beat chamber maids.
