Preparing kids for the brave new world is tough because we don't really know what they will be battling.
What you can do is try to make them grasp basics.
Any thing you want to create is made of smaller pieces. Usually the fewer different shaped pieces the better.

Teach them there are critters out there they haven't heard of.
Teach them they should try not to harm the critters because of ignorance.
To think through possible consequences of their behavior.
You never know if the omnipotent space invaders might be cousins of something we've killed off.
