Insulin has a long and strange history, but not a proud one.

Congress passed a law that foreign insulin is not allowed in the US. Do you think the big US supplier lobbied for that? Of course being a pharmaceutical company they wouldn't raise prices, that would be unethical.
A year or so ago Nova Nordisk opened a Billion dollar plant down south, and undercut the price considerably, like several hundred for a 5 pen box, of 3 mL pens.
Of course it's still not cheap but gotta pay for that Billion dollar plant.

Normally, I'd be against this sort of thing, out of quality concerns.

But maybe okay insulin is better than no insulin at all.
