We did a big renovation on our family room. We started with gutting the ole paneled walls and removing the wall to wall carpet that was 20 years old and pretty disgusting. We hired a contractor to do most of the renovations. We went with smooth drywall for the walls painted white. We had these nasty dark faux cedar beams in the faulted ceiling. I had the contractor cover them with smooth wood and paint white. We did tile that looks like a planked wood floor; I had a tile company do that as my knees just don't do tile work anymore.
We had a wet bar/cabinet/book shelf area on one wall and we gutted that as well. We went with semi-custom cabinets from Kraftmaid. My wife wanted something more contemporary so we chose a dark/almost black stain over maple in a Shaker style. We got glass shelves and glass front doors, hopefully might control dust a bit more than open shelves. The bar area is to the left and will have a small bar sink. We are going to pick out granite counters and back splash this week.
This is how it looked:

Here are the new cabinets, they were delivered and I had to store them in our garage. I had to add lighting in each upper cabinet and wire them up and then set in place. Then I installed them.

Not sure if I am loading images correctly, seems like a multi step task! Over the weekend we put on the glass front doors, finished the crown molding and yesterday I installed the under cabinet lighting.

Thanks! The other half of the room is greatly improved as well! Here are a few before and after. Most of the Asian antiques belonged to my grandparents who lived in China over 100 years ago.

That's a huge space, room for a lot of rumpusing. Thanks for sharing it looks great. I commend your choice to contract out what you'd rather not or don't feel you can do. Surprising how many resist that choice. "I said I'd do it and I will, no need to nag me every 6 months." LoL
I have trouble understanding the choice of stone counters and backsplashes other than it's in vogue. They are far from indestructible, in fact take considerable care to prevent damage. They're heavy, spendy, and too cold for sex.
