I've, as an adult, been just fine with giving people a gift without getting one in return. My reasoning is if I wanted that I'd have bought it, and if I can't afford it neither can you. This works for me as I don't know many wealthy people and the ones I do  know aren't likely to give anything to anyone without a damn good reason. About the only reason would be expecting a return on investment. Maybe that's why I'm not rich.
Anywho, this pushed my buttons...
