I'm always surprised when I see the mountains around L.A..

FWIW, I lived near LA, with breaks for school and Army, until I was 30.  Now I haven't been back for 30.
I had trouble recognizing it in this pic.
Near the right border, about three buildings in, you can see a pyramidal shape; this is the top of City Hall, which WAS the skyline I knew and where my great uncle worked..
Here are current, ten and 90 year old comparisons:

Yeah, the last time I was in LA city hall was king, that would have been 40ish years ago.
