Higher Edumacation

If someone has a goal, a burning desire to follow a dream and the path to that dream demands college, so be it. But it's a good idea to know what it will cost and the return for the investment. If the monetary reward for the investment isn't there and you are willing to become an defacto indentured servant to reach that goal, have at it. Don't give up the dream.

WAPO reviewing investigations by independent groups.

Highlights

  • Graduates of 1,234 programs at public universities and colleges  6% of those reporting are earning less than half what they owe each month.
  • Hundreds of programs result in zero financial return at both for-profit and nonprofit schools.
  • 5,989 Higher Ed programs which there is no financial return on invested tuition, 16% of programs with data   available.
  • Cost vs graduate’s income, 50% recoup in 5 years, 12.5% take 20+ years, 12.5% never.
  • 25+% of programs including most art, music, philosophy, religion and psychology leave students worse off looking at lifetime earnings.
  • Bachelor’s programs in science, engineering and health show quick returns, majors in drama, dance and religion are likely earning little more than high school graduates.
  •
  • Obama ordered the government to calculate whether students found jobs in 3 years paying enough to repay loans and cut off funding for programs that don’t. Schools stalled and sued, then Trump killed it, so schools get paid to turn out students whose income is too low to repay loans. Unpaid loans are on taxpayers.
  •
  • 2016 to 2018, 300,000 to 460,000 students each year defaulted on their loans, 5.3 million defaulters owe $116.6 Billion.
  • Can’t declare bankruptcy, debt collection, bad credit score, no tax refund, many companies won’t hire them.
  • Data is limited to the 77% of students with federal loans, and students who are unemployed, or in graduate or professional school 2 years after graduating aren’t counted.
  • https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/   has information on all schools and their programs and costs.
  •
  • Surveys at Rutgers and NYU found students overestimate their salary prospects.
  • A study by Stanford, U-MI, U-PA, and UC Irvine, of community collage students found;
  • Only 13% of students can rank the 4 broad categories of majors by salary.
  • Only 40% could name the 2 best paying vs 2 lowest paying majors.
  • Students overestimate salaries by 13%, and underestimate probability of finding a job by almost 25%

Look at biology sitting at 50, in a pandemic.

Re: Higher Edumacation

That's true, also it takes so long some run out of money. Family situations can change a lot in 8 years.
Going into nursing means later you could become a nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist when you have the means.

Re: Higher Edumacation

Funny thing about lab assistants, they're only sequencing the DNA  of viruses etc ... They just aren't paid much because they aren't doing something useful like coding for video games or smart bombs.

But the guy coding smart bombs may as a side hustle program a robot to replace the DNA sequencer.

Nah, what was I thinking, there ain't no money in that, better off programming a sex doll.

Re: Higher Edumacation

When I was going to school, higher education was about what we smoked.  Because Nixon was the president and a liar.
