The Scots start this and it's spread over Canada and the US like a plague, but a lot more pleasant.
Naming Snow Plow Truck, (Gritters across the pond) usually with some input from the community.
Quite often schools and youth groups are tapped to name them, coming up with some times very clever ones.
I suspect when the folks are anxiously waiting to see the truck they named they forget they cost $300,000+.
