Back in the early '80s I helped install a Big air compressor (4 inch outlet) for a company who was renting part of the Roebling factory long after their demise. Had a chance to check the place out briefly and it was pretty impressive, plus being the nursery for the Brooklyn Bridge and a host of others gave it a good vibe.

Good Lord that's a lot of wire.

It is also a lot of bridge.
Even after many hundreds of crossings, it is always a treat.

I wonder how much heavier the bridge is with a fresh coat of paint?
Google tells me... "Painting the Golden Gate is a herculean task requiring more than 47,000 gallons of paint. The paint alone adds almost 500,000 pounds to the weight of the bridge."
Also... “The current “gold standard” for bridge coating entails the use of a three-coat system consisting of an inorganic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy midcoat, and a urethane topcoat”
And... “Average Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District Painter hourly pay in the United States is approximately $54.17, which is 212% above the national average.”

Everything that makes painting difficult, even impossible, is constant there.

So the wire in a cable would wrap around the world 3 times!
I've driven across about 30 times but never walked across.
I think it's obscenely expensive to drive across now.

Hi BigV, clodfobble,and glatt!
I've always missed this place and the generally outstanding IotDs often xoxoxoBruce's nice work. I think about this place frequently but have been really busy, lots of life changes, and just never quite making it back.
I'll be trying to come by much more often now.
Thanks all very much for the warm welcome.
