This factoid kind of fits the idea.
Yesterday I learned that during the Depression and on in to
WW2, the need for protein and other things led to the harvest, packaging and shipping of 600,000 tons of Pacific Sardines, every year for ten or more.
That was in large part out of Monterey's cannery row.
A limit of 25,000 tons since has led to barely that much being available today.
