Teens Working

Teens in the labor force as a percentage has declined.

First, there's more teens, probably an increase not matched by jobs available.
I know, I know, businesses whining they can't get enough help, but we're talking an age bracket that's probably in school full time too.
I started working summers and school vacations at 10 and by 12 I had to start smoking cigarettes full time to use all the money.
There are a hell of a lot of distractions for these teens today. Internet, 2000 TV channels, video games, and hundreds of porn channels.
In the 16 to 19 group parents are still concerned with safety out in the cold cruel world, especially for girls.

Re: Teens Working

I'm not surprised, they're looking for students who will reflect favorably on the alma mater down the road with community involvement rather than working 80 hour weeks.

Re: Teens Working

Up until the pandemic, the vast majority of food service, retail, and other entry-level jobs simply wouldn't hire under 18. (I know because I tried to help both my stepkids get jobs during that time.) It's only just beginning to shift back now because they are desperate for workers.

Re: Teens Working

A local metal molding company sent out post cards looking for workers.  They made a point of saying there would be drug testing, but, they also made the point of saying they were not concerned with marijuana/THC.

I guess they are re-evaluating.

i heard that competitive colleges do not value summer jobs on the application. they want their entrants doing volunteer activity and specialized programs and whatnot

That pre-qualifies applicants who are wealthy enough to do volunteer work.

this news makes me happy

SonofV just got a job offer letter, a significant upgrade, same line of work, but who the F knows what could derail the consummation.

--side note, did not know that consummation had two "m"s, thank you google.
