Camping

One of the most non-explaining words in English.
Camping means many different experiences to different people.
To some a tent in the backyard. To others camping with the Scouts.
Hiking, biking, riding, or rowing with a bedroll under the stars.
I read the US has over 11 million motor-homes and almost a million Class A motor-homes for the 1%.
I know for sure not all those 11 million motor-homes are store bought, many are home built.
I've seen many, I built one, and know for sure some folks have no shame. LoL

The agony and ecstasy....

They abuse cars like this Buick...

One of the favorite targets of suffering is a used bus...

To be continued

Re: Camping

Yeah.  These ARE fun.

I spent too much time scrutinizing THE AGONY.  I was wondering how it stay on there.  But it's strapped on, and the truck appears to be on some sort of stand.

It looks like hell on the outside, but that's just to deter thieves.  It's a Taj Mahal inside.

Re: Camping

Taj Mahal? Not hardly.

The bus abuse is just awful but they get away with it because nobody cares about old buses.

Probably an extension of general loathing for buses as low rent travel for children and ne'er-do-wells.

There are sickos abusing other forms of discarded public transportation also.

I don't know what this is, what it's for, how it works, or even it's sex...

Re: Camping

If they had a crystal ball, they would never use those old VW buses like that.  They command too high a price now.

Some more than others, the ones with the little windows in the roof are crazy, one with half the windows not far behind. They were a compromise to do a bigger list of things but none any better than acceptable minimum.
But the beast became associated with "...eleven long haired Friends of Jesus In a Chartreuse microbus".
I'll bet a large number of people seeking to buy, never even rode in one, let alone owned one.
College roommate and me in his Mother's microbus. Driver crowing how he hit 70 mph (downhill) I think it was 3 times in 90 miles of the MA Pike. But burned a valve which cost him a lot of beer money.

Re: Camping

Just what are these "off-roaders" compensating for with the monster wheels?

There is "off-road" and then there's "Cross-Country".

Some of these builders are showing off skills, or balls, and some proving a point.

They do it for many reasons, one of which is desperation...

Yes, and one that saps you time, energy and money give the greatest bragging rights.
Fire persons need love too...

There will always be a small number of unexplainable, not even by the builders...

Re: Camping

Some campers like to be good, and others want to be nautical.

Actually the bottom two are clever, believe it or not the boat comes off.
A friend use to spend time on Marathon Key and showed me pictures of one very similar to the rig in the middle,
both before and after launch. I'd have sworn it was one piece up until that point.

Hybrids of a different feather.

Re: Camping

Thank you, Sir! Great story with that camper, good insight into what drives people to build these odd campers.

I stead of hauling a car some folks are flying higher...

or have their head in the clouds...

but sometimes there are victims...

Re: Camping

This is the result of accumulating too much stuff.
Yeah, you got it honestly, it's valuable crap, it's near and dear, but do you need it?
Better yet do you use it, or is it in case you do some day?

Re: Camping

I still have my M35 Deuce & Half made by Kaiser. I hope to someday get around to making a camper out of it. I plan to switch it to single-sixes using MRAP wheels and take a 16-foot camper off its axle to mount on the bed. The old girl has a pto winch that pulls more than the 12,000 lb on my truck.

Re: Camping

As long as you have the juice and the mount hasn't rusted away you could hang it from a tree.

Re: Camping

I installed a Warn winch on my 3/4 ton GMC a long time ago.
Its capacity exceeds the weight of the truck and I have often wondered about this.
I've gotten pretty good at multiplication with pulleys and blocks, but will probably just continue to wonder.
Now I am going to watch Arizona beat Philly.

The stacks on the VW 5th wheel make me suspect it doesn't have 1500cc.
