Going to need spare sections of track and don't want to be stuck waiting for parts to be brought up from supply, so might as well carry them along.
Now if they have to carry the weight and it's already claustrophobic inside, use them for extra armor.

They really just figured that war out on the fly.

American GIs were doing same with sandbags. Patton had them removed. It did not prove much if any additional protection. And caused tanks to both run slower and wear out faster.
Those layers did nothing to stop a 57, 75, or 88 shell.
