Just in case anyone wants to talk about it....
For me ...USA swimming trials are underway ...and it's weird that I've "known" two of the athletes competing since before they could swim. They're a kid and grandkid of people also involved with running the county summer swimming championships and currently swim for University of Michigan. one of them just came sixth in his semi final so it's unlikely they'll be selected but not impossible......

We watched the early heats. It amazing to me that these kids can cheat a peek at the jumbo-tron during the race. I found it strange that scheduling prevented some folks from doing multiple events. Does that happen a lot?

Careful swimming in the Olympics. Apparently they want to host them in the Seine, and French protestors are planning to defecate in it on the day the politicians are taking a dip to demonstrate its cleanliness. No word on whether it would continue when it's Olympians instead of politicians, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

People are messed up sometimes.

To be fair, the river has been considered too polluted for swimming for over a century, and it's unlikely that it will be actually safe in time for the Olympics. The politicians taking a quick dip once demonstrates safety (ie fails to) in the same way that drinking one glass of water from Flint demonstrates that it's safe for the community. The Olympians will be spending more time than that in the water, just as the residents of Flint will be using more than one glass of water. Crapping in the river on the day of the stunt is a bit like putting a month's worth of lead into the glass before handing it to the politician, hoping to derail the stunt.
I won't "to be fair" the idea of doing it to the Olympians, and AFAIK they aren't the target of the protests, but now that the idea of doing it is out there, it's a risk.

They call them heats because swimmers must swim like hell to keep warm.

That's only for the Open Water events, an entirely different kettle of fish

1) the jumbotron can be an easier way than looking at the other lanes to see if they need to pick it up. They have no communication with coach during a race. At lower level meets, coaches can whistle or drum at the end of the lane, but not at this level.
2) Yes. If you are good at backstroke and breaststroke, for example, you generally have to pick one and/or become an IM swimmer - they are almost always next to one another in regular swim meets so you don't get chance to rest and recuperate between events. It is unusual to be good at both of those, though -which is why they get scheduled that way. Most races only take a minute or two, but there are a lot of different events so they rip through them pretty quickly. Also, at huge meets like the Olympics, qualifying events are held simultaneously with semi finals and finals in a second pool, so you can't be in two events where you might end up needing to be in a qualifier for one and a final for another

At lower levels, USA swimming enforces dive-over starts for most races (not backstroke) to get through the events faster. That means, when you finish, you tuck yourself under the starting block and stay in the water until the next race has started, then you get get out. And do it fast.

Where are they getting the water to fill the pools?

Well I don't think the swimmers I know made it -they almost did, but the Ann Arbor runner I almost know did make it.
he followed my kids through elementary and high schools, with the same teachers... and his mom was the winner of the category I ran in at my half marathon this month. I mean she'd gone home, done the laundry, calculated an extra digit of Pi by the time I finished and wouldn't know me from a blob of jelly on the sidewalk but... ya know

So you're saying you would have put a scare into her at the start, but you didn't get a great position.
I watched some of the shot put, I like watching these light-footed giants. Our guy Crouser goes 6'7" 320lbs.

My kids' high school apparently was home to another 2024 Olympian -a speed climber. Just graduated a couple of weeks ago. I feel so old...

We play Farkle on zoom bi-weekly with my buddy and a couple of his adult children. The one kid is a swim coach in Virginia. One of his swimmers was recruited to UV and just got a cool welcoming text from her new captain Gretchen Walsh, Olympian.

The point is you both decided to participate, you both finished, that separates the wheat from us chaff.
Times just seperate the wheat from faster wheat.

The women's gymnastic team outfits are always a big deal for the committee to choose.
They even give each design a name but I suppose it makes communication easier talking about the 8 designs with the athletes, designers. and manufacturer.
Of course you can't buy them but the manufacturer said if they were for sale they'd be about $2000 each.
Each of the women gets 8 outfits and the committee takes along some spares.
Since the women gymnasts come in a bunch of shapes and sizes I guess they might be tailored.
They sure don't want them to be uncomfortable, restrictive, or falling off.

Haley Batten wins silver! I really like this course a nice mix of cool rock gardens and fitness testing climbs. Batten broke a wheel, rode it to the pit, and fought all the way back to the podium. The Frenchwoman Prevot won her first Olympic medal as she retires from mtb to road race full-time.
