Far side of the moon

China brought back some material from the moon yesterday.
The pic of the lander is from a place that has never been directly seen from Earth.
I have been amazed for years by the concept that a lunar civilization based there would have had to invent a concept of an unseen Earth to make sense of things.
China returns samples from the moon's far side in historic 1st | Space

Re: Far side of the moon

Ares (now called Artemis because it was so defective by design) is stuck in space for weeks.  Unable to bring two crewmen back.  Because after 20 years of design, by business school graduates, it still cannot fly safely.

Remember that Ares, Constellation, and Orion were the products of 'experts' such as Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc under George Jr and other business school graduates.  Suppose to fly by 2009 before the Space Shuttles were retired.  It is now stuck in the ISS due to thruster problems and gas leaks.  Multiple failures.  Tributes to the same people who also invented Saddam's WMDs.  And fleet of navy ships that are scrapped.

So we will now put a business school graduate back in the White House?

Last week's Economist has a four page article describing American science receding since 2001.  China has now become the world leaders in many industries that require innovators.  Industries that MBAs have now demented to increase profits in America.  About that same time (2001) Boeing was taken over by MBAs.  737 Max is a disaster.  All space programs by Boeing are in trouble.  Including Ares (Artemis) and Sea Launch.

Re: Far side of the moon

The most significant fact is that China is displacing the US in more sciences every decade.

America is foolishly spending something like 95% of our space budget on putting men in space.  Wasting vast sums because that does the least amount of science.  And, thanks to MBAs, we cannot even get that right.  As Ares demonstrated.  Massive funds spent in over 20 years.  And it still does not work.

How to keep all readers ignoring what is important?  We rename it Artemis.  Meanwhile the Chinese, although not as successful yet in this industry, have accomplished major science.

How much has American innovation declined?  Today innovative advances, stifled today, will become obvious in the next ten and twenty years.  Only then will business school graduates (ie disciples of Trump) be able to quantify what should be obvious today.

BTW, Trump restarted the Ares, Constellation, Orion program - because he is a fool and a business school graduate.  20 years and it still does not work.

This China accomplishment is only a tiny part of what should have been obvious ten years ago.  Chinese are even suspected of major accomplishments in satellite quantum encryption.  All part of a future that will be world dominate when the current Generation Alpha expects to own homes and families.

In 2000, China created twenty times less science papers compared to the US.  Papers rated by a quality system that eliminates junk science.  By 2010, it was only four times less.  Today, China outputs more major science papers than the US.  And maybe almost double what the entire EU produces.

Of top ten innovative universities in the world, seven are now in China.

The publication Nature has an index that rates papers in all major science publications.  In 2014, China came in second. Only 1/3rd the papers generated in America.  Today China now dominates that index.

Who are world leaders in lithium battery and EV vehicles?  A technology that Clinton tried to advance in 1990 - and failed.  Because all American auto manufacturers have the same defeatist management that is appearing in other industries.  Most did not even drive cars.  This Chinese accomplishment is just a tip of an iceberg.

How obvious should it have been?  In the old Cellar, I had cited numbers that said how anti-American all American automakers were.   The 70 horsepower per liter engine was an ideal example.  Extremists demeaned me rather than address the damning fact.  Today, American vehicles are inferior to much of the world.  Most cars, made in America, are by patriotic car companies - from foreign nations.  Even the US post office wants to buy superior Mercedes Benz vehicles.  Because American versions are inferior.

How long ago was this problem - and not yet seen?  30 years?  Where will we be in 20 years now that Chinese industries are doing what America once did best?  Before innovators were replaced by MBAs.

Chinese science is now the world's best in physical, chemistry, and environmental sciences.  The next innovation of solar cells is perovskite panels.  China has long been the world leader in this new innovation.  The world's best deep space telescope is now in China.  World's fastest supercomputers - China.

This one reported space accomplishment is a tiny example of a major trend in the past 20 years.  See the bigger picture.  That is the point of Chinese accomplishment.

No problem.  Some idiot just proposes more tax cuts for the rich.  As if that will make America great - innovative.

Much of American successes are directly traceable to so many uneducated immigrants that got educated, created innovations, and are the source of one half of America's Fortune 500.  Now that Trump and his dumbest American supporter (who advocate hate) are so vocal.  In the past ten years, a massive reimmigration of American trained Chinese back to China.  Trump hate is cited as a major reason.  Just another reason why China is succeeding more often in this and other industries.

See the tip of that iceberg.  Ignore it.  Then 20 years later, discover what is ongoing today. In 20 years, will be measured even by business school graduates.  Who will probably use Trump style hate to then blame the Chinese.  Rather than the problem.  As this accomplishment indicates.

Anyone want to look at my link and talk about the mission?

This a fantastically interesting idea. They would have to infer the existence of a massive, gravitationally interacting body that is beyond their capacity to directly observe.
That sounds tantalizingly similar to the observable phenomenon we must logically attribute to "dark matter" despite ever having directly observed whatever that is.

Is there an article here?

Hi Grav, how are things?

Well, I'm still upright, haven't gotten lost lately, and I still know who I am, so I probably shouldn't complain.

Thanks for asking.

It was faked in a Forbidden City secret movie studio, that's why the shadows don't jibe and the flag stands out with no wind.

Mission up to now has been quite an accomplishment for any nation.  But nothing useful is known until we see results from those samples.

First indications of water on the moon was around 2009.  Eventually science finally discovered that some water must exist; around 2018 and 2020.  Science can take that long.  So we really will not have what is relevant from this Chinese mission for many years.  All we can say is that they succeeded in doing something quite advanced.  Recovered samples.  Now we wait to learn how significant.

Chinese also have many communication satellites orbiting the moon.   Who else has any such major accomplishments?

The Ares (Artemis) capsule that took 20 years to design is now stuck in space for at least a month.  Its thruster jets are now in a one month or longer study in White Sands.  To discover why we now make many defective thrusters.  55 years after American thrusters once always worked.  (Only exception being one Gemini mission.)

First thing that Chinese mission demonstrates - how little the American space accomplishments have been in the past 20 years.  Where all significant accomplishments are done in less than 5% of NASA's budget.

BTW and unfortunately, Hubble is in trouble.  That is not intended to be poetry.

All NASA does now it farm projects out to private contractors for Billions of Bucks.

Re: Far side of the moon

Nasa's spacecraft. designed 20 years ago, and finally flying for the first time, remains stuck in space.  Fortunately the astronauts used skill to dock to the ISS.  Othewise (it is quietly said) they would have been stuck in space just like Major Tong.

They have now been struck on the ISS for 60 days.  Word now from NASA - they may be stuck there until February.  The design by Boeing management is so defective that they must wait for SpaceX to rescue them in February.

NASA never builds their hardware.  Everything is contracted to prime contractors for each component.  For example, Apollo.  Saturn V by Boeing.  Command module by North American Aviation.  Lunar module by Grumman.  Escape system by GE.

Difference is top management.  Once from where the work gets done.  Everything now business by finance people from business schools.

One need only learn from the worst two American president in 40 years.  Both were business school graduates.

"Boeing paid McDonnell Douglas to buy Boeing."
