What are you currently focused on?

There are so many things happening right now, what has your attention?

Olympics, Israel war, Russia/US prisoner exchange, US residential election, UK new government, LGBTQ rights, Career, abortion rights, Me. Education, Stock Market, getting shit done in your house/garden/etc....

I'm working on decluttering and cleaning inside my house.  Well mentally at least. I've made progress, but it's slow. I'm also a little concerned about the US pres race and check in on the olympics a bit (results, don't watch)

Re: What are you currently focused on?

I’m focusing on those whom I should mate with to repopulate the earth after the nuclear war. They should all be good breeding stock who will bear strong children to pull the plow and till the soil.

I’m also looking at the pros and cons of staying in the workforce vs retiring and doing volunteer work to stay active and involved. You know, just in case the nuclear war thing fizzles and peace breaks out.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Right now I'm focused on holding it together for one more week.

Monday through Friday is the last week of the summer camp I run. Our camp director (who does all the kid/curriculum stuff; I'm the parents/bookkeeping person) had a death in the family and will not be back until Tuesday, which is tough because Monday is a really important day, kid/curriculum wise.

Wednesday is Minifobette's first day of 11th grade (her school starts earlier than most.) She's close to getting her license, but I didn't manage to get it done in time, so Minifob is officially tasked with driving her for the first three days. I have not purchased any school supplies and don't intend to; she can tell me what she needs after she meets her actual teachers.

Monday night is also Back To School Night, which doesn't require much of me but I do need to drive Minifobette there and also drop off a box full of books that Minifob is donating to one of his old teachers... because in 11 days Minifob heads off to Florida for college. Sometime this week we have to make more progress on packing (which really means the emotional work of separating his keepsakes that will remain with us, his donations, and the things he actually needs to bring with him.)

On Tuesday I'm scheduled to record a podcast (plus edit it during 8 random hours Wed-Fri,) but I might have to cancel. Which would make three weeks in a row that we've cancelled, which sucks, but I have to see how the other hosts feel about it.

Also on Tuesday, our dog is getting stitches out for the surgery she had two weeks ago. They say the lump was benign, though, so that's a bright spot. Mr. Clod is taking her to that if I have the podcast, I'm doing it if I don't. Minifob is taking Minifobette to her music lessons on Wednesday.

On Friday, the camp pizza party goes until 9:00, then Minifobette has a driving lesson on Saturday morning, and Sunday night is possibly the camp staff party, but someone still has to coordinate that schedule.

But last week was worse, and the week in between all this and sending Minifob to Florida will be relatively easy. One foot in front of the other.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

You can do this Clod!

We're focused on trying to get our foundation in and capped by winter. A series of crazy rainstorms have hit the area, ruining several roads and the concrete guy took on a large ever-changing job which he and his crew are grumbling about. Our excavation guy is cleaning up the basement and starting the septic so maybe after some delay we'll get back on track.

And also which college, Clodfobble?

Also... A new word:  Clodfobbling.  Living an insanely busy crazy life and killing it.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Embry-Riddle. It's an aerospace/aeronautics specialty school--they don't even offer an English degree, History degree, etc. The closest thing they have outside of STEM is a business degree, but it's still like "Project Management for the Space Industry in Particular." He's very excited and only a little anxious, which in itself is a massive achievement. We're so, so proud.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Clod, I'm curious how your life is going these days.  It sounds like a typical family of active teenagers and involved parents.  And maybe the health side of things for the kids isn't as all-consuming as it was years ago?

You were moving mountains when the kids were younger, working to manage their symptoms and ensure their well being.  Now that they are significantly older, has it gotten easier?  I know all the activities makes life hectic, but has managing the diet and health of the family become more routine and are they somewhat self sufficient in that area?  Do they get it, and know how to take care of themselves?  Do you get the sense that when they are off on their own, they might eat the wrong stuff? Does it still matter? (My own teenagers were pretty good, but sometimes made choices counter to their best interests.)

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Oh yeah, they've been stable for years. They still take a fuckton of meds/supplements (occasionally we've been able to remove one, but just as often we try and symptoms start coming back, so the med goes back in rotation) but they handle all that themselves--filling their own weekly pill organizers, able to explain what each pill does and why they take it, etc.

The cooking, for me, is routine by now, and involves things like "once a week I cook a 7-9 lb. brisket and just put the whole thing cut up in the fridge so there's always meat for lunches and nights when I can't manage to cook." I admit I don't bother as much anymore with the more labor-intensive things like hamburger buns and salad dressings--I still will sometimes, we're just more likely to eat things like pork chops or chicken thighs that I can just pop in the oven with minimal prep. I keep a permanent stock of frozen fruits and vegetables in case I fail to keep up with the fresh options.

As far as the kids, they are both fully on board, conceptually, with their diet, and honestly intend to eat the right stuff when they're on their own. I've been very clear that once they're 18 their choices are their own, and it's not my job to tell them what to do anymore. And I'm not really worried about the college years, because cafeterias have gotten way better since allergies became a generation-wide issue, and there will always be a salad bar and fruit available. The real test will be once they have to start cooking for themselves. They've been responsible for cooking two of their staple foods (lamb meatballs and coconut flour muffins, which they both eat every day) for about 5 years now, and they're good at it, but neither one of them enjoys cooking. Minifobette actively hates it. But even then, I don't think she'll cave to fast food or anything like that, she'll just choose to live off nothing but frozen peas and blueberries.

I worry a little about them getting into relationships with people who don't eat well, because Minifob especially is a people-pleaser and I can see him eating the wrong food not because he wants to, but because someone he cares about is pressuring him to--but then again, I'm also pretty confident that same person would break up with him once they saw the full force of what he's like, emotionally, on those foods, even if they walked away never believing it was the foods causing it.

Long story short, everything got slowly easier as we honed in on what worked for them, and now it's not hard at all beyond normal teenage stuff--which in itself is never easy, but it's at least readily identifiable.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Your kids sure landed in the right house. I did an eval this week for a child who, remarkably, remains on track despite the "Irish Ghetto" home conditions. Your parental commitment gives me hope.

I'm glad to hear it, Clod.  It's about what I imagined for you.

FYI, before you know it, your life is likely to be quiet.  Don't blink.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

Oh, I know it. Mr. Clod and I already have a loosely-formed plan for a long vacation in September 2026. We don't know where yet, we just know it's going to be a "lay there and do nothing" kind of vacation, rather than a "race through all the fun kid and tourist activities" trip.

Re: What are you currently focused on?

An old friend of mine went to Embry-Riddle. When she graduated she had become so proficient at doing the setups and maintenance on their flight simulators they offered her a job. BUT, (there's always a but, sometimes a butt) before she could start a hurricane came through and decimated all their planes and some of their buildings. So that job disappeared until they got squared away again.

Oh, and that's where the 9-11 terrorists learned to fly, which isn't the schools fault, but they went there because it's the best.
