J turns

I hadn't run into this before but apparently MN is going whole hog for J-turns as they are easier, cheaper, faster to build, and take less land than roundabouts.
When you come to a to crossing a busier/higher ranking road you can only turn right.
Then you must scoot across traffic quickly to left exit and make a U-turn on the median.
Now scoot across traffic to exit right onto the road you were on.
The engineers say it's safer but more importantly it doesn't disrupt traffic they're going home in.
I have my doubts about not disrupting traffic on the main highway when you have to cross 2 lanes then exit.
If the person manages to get up to speed in the left lane so not to effect traffic are the going to exit at speed?
I think not. Even if there's an exit lane my experience is they will brake before moving over.
I heard the locals try to avoid roads that have them.
Oh, there is also one in RI on US Rte 1.
