Andrew Shoemaker owned a photo gallery in Lahaina which burnt to the ground along with the rest of the town.
Since then he’s been taking pictures of the 40 to 70 foot waves called Jaws, on Maui’s north shore.
In an open top boat which takes a few tourists for a wet tour of the surf, he wears a wetsuit and carries a waterproof camera bag.
At least one tourist pukes on every trip.
He likes to get a surfer in the picture for a sense of scale.
