I just stumbled upon a discussion of a famous paper from so long ago.  That so accurately describes how we got here.

David Isenberger's paper is "The Rise of The Stupid Network".  This author also details why so many corporate failures are directly traceable to products of business schools.  And why "Al Gore had to invent the internet" ...  15 years after it was readily available and stifled.
