When quality products at bargain prices were offered directly to the public...

Exotic products from exotic lands you've yearned for...

Products which not only fulfilled desires but taught valuable lessons in consumerism.

I see that Whip-It came out in 1980.  I remember shortly after it came out, maybe in the following year, when I would have been 14 years old, I had a mildly embarrassing moment that stayed in the recesses of my mind all these years later.

There was a section of old chain, maybe from a broken swing set or something, just kicking around.  I found myself holding it and marveling at how a chain moves.  It was sort of like a rope, but with more substance behind it.  It flexed nicely when you would swing it around a little.  I was just appreciating the inherent beauty of the chain. These links of solid metal that together formed a flexible chain.  So I tried really swinging it and started slamming it against the driveway.  It was really satisfying. I guess a 14 year old boy has some pent up energy.  So I spent a few minutes just whipping this one spot of the driveway with the chain, oblivious to the world.  Just me and the chain.

And then the next door neighbor came over to me and started singing Devo's Whip It.

Another thing about 14 year old boys is that they are old enough to be self conscious.

You didn't have much choice since you weren't allowed to have slaves anymore.

Texas Tongs sound good in theory if you want to take the sport out of sport fishing.

If I get within five feet of a fish hook, it ends up stuck  in me somewhere.  Never fails, for 70 years.
That device would just make it worse.
What they need is a safety, like a gun.

Re: Advertising

I can understand your reticence with that track record.
I use to go fishing every Sunday for 6 to 8 months of the year. I did that for over 20 years until my partner died and never got hooked. I've been pricked but never deep enough for the barbs to come into play where I couldn't pull it out without pushing it though. I've had a fish spit a lure with 2 or 3 treble hooks on it so it came back at me like a missile but managed to chuck and jive out of harms way.

I've been lucky or maybe rewarded for being a very good boy.

I heard about the Duck & Cover drill, and sampled the awful Civil Defense Crackers from the dorm air-raid shelter, but was completely unaware of the need for special soap.

For simple household use, I like the Phillips/straight combo.
For our motocross and enduro bikes in the '70s, we replaced the Phillips with Allen heads.
