I would guess that the tail gear of the SK-1 was jettisoned on take off.
It needed, and got, a lot of development.

Yeah, it has the same issue as the Corsair during the war, you really can't see unless you're flying.

Prewar planes were certainly diverse, lots of people had ideas, a few had skills, and some had money, but most didn't pan out.

In the Big One WW II, the main reason Hitler lost was the Russians bogged the Nazi army down on the Eastern Front long enough for the Allies to mass an invasion force in England that could kick ass in Africa, Italy, and finally France.
All that time we were sending aid in materiel from bullets, to Jeeps, to aircraft. Most went by ship to Murmansk, but the planes were flown over the ALSIB (Alaska-Siberia) air route. That required establishing refueling spots and like Ringo said, "it don't come easy".

When to build a boat in your cellar or a plane in a hangar you got to get it out of there.
For this plane a ramp raised the nose to make the tail dip enough to clear the door frame.

It's not an open cockpit, I believe it's a DC-4 or C-4.
How about a flying submarine, or submersible aircraft? Shouldn't be a problem, a little duct tape, a little flexseal, bob's your uncle.
