Skill vs Technology

There's a tug-of-war going on between skill and technology. Manufacture of goods uses design to eliminate the need for skill, and the ability to automate.
I'm sure there is robotic machines to make a sail corner as strong or stronger than this hand sewn corner.
But damn... respect!

Re: Skill vs Technology

That's beautiful.
Hand sewn reinforced reinforcement.
A day's work for whoever did it?  Two for a novice?
A week or a month for me.

Re: Skill vs Technology

Yeah, probably a guy with one eye and a hook could do better than I.
They did have one cheat, a leather strap that hooked over the thumb and went around the hand. Set into the strap was a piece of metal with some small divots for pushing the needle through that canvas.
They still make them, although a lot fancier, both left and right handed, for about $22.

Sort of an attached thimble.
Damn, I hate either end of a needle poking my thumb.

Re: Skill vs Technology

Yeah, that's the way it used to was, now Boston Dynamics will sell you a robot to do that stuff.
Bunch of damn fools, horses, oxen, butter churns, a D-8 CAT would take care of all that shit. Quickly too, and remotely if you want.
Watching that girl hammer out that red hot steel, putting his head down close with no glasses... stupid. Scale coming off that metal with every hammer blow.
