In the late 1850s the experts in Woodingdean were sure if they dug... er, I mean have others dig, a well it would hit water at 400 feet. They didn't. After digging several laterals without success the experts said go down deeper.
They dug for 24/7 for 4 years, used the well for 4 years then capped for good.

I'd guess that 6 foot diameter is about the smallest possible to "hand dig."

Forging is about as old a technology as it gets but the Germans have developed a way to do it faster, easier, safer, with larger pieces...
I wonder if they have a 300 lb waitress walking in front yelling hot stuff, watch your back, comin' through?
