Jeanne Holm was the first woman general officer in Air Force history, promoted to brigadier general in July 1971. She enlisted in the Army in World War II, serving as a truck driver. Recalled to active duty during the Berlin Airlift, she was commissioned in the newly created Air Force. She was the first woman in any service to be promoted to major general in 1973.
Started as a WWII truck driver. Queen Elizabeth II was a truck mechanic during that war, must be a good starting point.

When I look at the picture of Dr Baker I see an aggressive woman who knows her shit, knows she knows her shit, and lets people know she knows her shit.
After reading about her accomplishments I sure of my impression.
I've met people like her, and while they can be abrasive, working for them is great.

I saw pictures of her in "the golden years" and she is one of those women that's pretty
no matter how many scars and wrinkles they accumulate.

In traditional Polish names, the male version ends in -i and the female version ends in -a. So a father named Pilsudski would have sons named Pilsudski and daughters named Pilsudska.

Wow, the surname changes with sex?
Polish do a lot of things different but usually some logic behind it.

Instructor gets the protective gear?

The instructor is doing the maneuvering and needs to be protected from the tandem jumper and anything on that person which could become detached and hit the instructor. The tandem jumper will be required to wear soft shoes like sneakers rather than heavy hiking shoes or boots so if there’s a malfunction and they tumble, the instructor won’t get clobbered to the detriment of his performance. The instructor is responsible for that other person’s life while the tandem jumper is just along for the ride.

I've ventured an opinion before that I felt women won The Big One, WW II, for the US.
When millions of men when inducted into the military it was women who kept the country functioning.
Everything from garbage(wo)men to professors and critically in war materiel. Planes and ammo for Russia,
our European allies and our own troops in Europe and the Pacific.
Rosie the Riveter was no fairy tale there were thousands of them building planes by the thousands...
some even wore saddle shoes...

I don't see why if a woman chooses that lifestyle it's certainly and honorable career... as long as it's a choice and she's not forced into it. Shouldn't be forced out of it either.
There have always been women who exceeded in their chosen field, and always will be. Some make it to the very top of their gig with awards and accolades but those spots are extremely limited. Many more we don't hear about are one step down, respected by their peers and coworkers.

I've said many times American women won WWII for us when the stepped up to produce the materiel the allies needed to defeat the axis.
Another reason is this compass my Uncle was issued as a Seabee in the south pacific.
I imagine they could turn them out pretty quick.
Compare that to the Brits issue...
In fairness the Brit model looks like a rangefinder also but does everyone needing a compass need a rangefinder too? It has to take a lot longer to make. Just the 13 visible screws.

It’s not a rangefinder, it’s a bearing sight. It’s also standard for the military today. The bearing sight is used to identify the azimuth (shoot an azimuth) of a distant point (target). Shooting an azimuth to the same target, from several different known points, can enable plotting its coordinates on a map a.k.a. Intersection. Shooting azimuths to several different known points from the same location can enable plotting one’s own coordinates on a map a.k.a. Resection.

Why? Targeting or map making?
Offline
To convey location information to others or establish one’s own location.
The military uses the S.A.L.U.T.E. report format for enemy activity: Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, Equipment.
In addition to targeting, the information will be used to update tactical maps.
Compasses are still in the inventory because they don’t require batteries or solar power to operate.

I'd say lensatic (ha, spellcheck) compass.
Actually there is one more step for Kamala's notability.

The old British compass being discussed isn't a lensatic compass, it's a prismatic compass (it has a prism, not a lens). It functions like the viewfinder in an SLR camera. Prismatic compasses are considered slightly more accurate than lensatic compasses; also, sighting and reading can be done at the same time without changing the position. US military lensatic compasses are less expensive to make, more durable, and considered good enough for their intended purpose of narrowing coordinates down to a 10-meter square as opposed to a detail map's 100m grid square.

What? You don't think Vice-president of the United States is a not a notable achievement?
A man is notable for becoming the mayor of a Podunk Village but a woman has to become President to receive the same accolades?
Ha, just fucking with you Jim, I know what you meant.

Is there an advantage beyond being able to read the dial at the same time as viewing the object?

The prismatic compass is a chick magnet.
