I hope this may be informative, maybe even helpful. I've never been one to take much notice of complementary health products, but, then, until now, I 've never had any reason to do so.
My daily wakening but short-lived lower back stiffness took a big leap about three months ago, resulting in unbearable searing pain across my back and down my legs. It left me immoblie when it struck, leading me to believe I had developed sciatica. Fortunately, the UK National Health Service meant that an MRI scan was available within a few days, and this determined that I actually had developed arthritis in the lower lumbar area of my spine. Not curable, but the pain it caused could be managed.
Knowledge was one thing, treatment was another, and all my GP could offer was extra strong cocodamol. Ibuprofen wasn't an option because of its adverse effect on the kidneys. The cocodamol prescribed left me drowsy and constipated, so not really even a short term solution. Time for research into my condition.
A lot of misleading claims about the effectiveness of various essntially massaging aids and of various medicinal supplements, but, thankfully, one anti-inflammatory supplement called curcumin did appear to have beneficial effects - a claim backed up by a number of testing programmes and by many user reviews. So I started taking it in capsule form, one a day, each containing 500 mg of curcumin and 2 mg of piperine (black pepper that significantly improves absorption).
Results so far have been good. I still take painkillers but nothing more than paracetamol, the curcumin is taking care of the majority of the pain. That's one side of it, the pain control. I also wanted to see if I could find something that would prevent or at least slow down the growth of the arthritis. More research, and I'm about to complement my curcumin with someting called boswellia. Again research and testing suggest that the combination of these two supplements aids the management of joint pain and also assists joint suppleness.
As I have had and want to continue to have a fairly active life - dancing various genres and predominantly modern jive being the main components - I'm pleased to say that so far my remedies are working well. I still think I can do better, though, so I will continue to explore.

I’m glad you’re managing it. We don’t have decent testing for supplement efficacy or even contents in the States so it’s pretty sketchy business here.

I take Turmeric with black pepper extract too. My shoulders are totally fucked and the top shoulder surgeon in the area said it was the best option. Probably 10 years ago now. He said he could attempt a surgery, but at best it would only provide a temp solution and reducing inflammation rather than trying to stop it was the more practical solution. he said take at least three times the suggested dosage, you can take it all at once no need to spread through the day, he also said they've proven that the black pepper extract vastly increases the efficacity of the turmeric in reducing inflammation ... but they still haven't figured out how. (They might have by now).
It did work. I avoided surgery, the pain and movement limitation went away. I lowered the dose to the recommended. Periodically, they get bad again (like now) and I ramp the dose back up. I'm hypermobile and the socket part of my shoulder joints is too large and weirdly shaped so shoulder displacement/dislocation and Iare not strangers ..but I'm still dodging surgery with my trusty turmeric

I also have arthritis popping up everywhere but it only occasionally causes me pain -I suspect this may be why.

Not really my field of expertise but I think circumin is the 'effective' element in turmeric.

Also..... unless you are prone to kidney stones... it's otherwise "mostly harmless"*, so why not? Even if the effect turns out to be no better than that from a placebo ....it's still an effect. Placebos have valid medical (and general life) uses. (When I was a child and woke with nightmares, I held on to my dream charm as I went back to sleep. As I got older, I realized it was just a large pearl button.. No matter ...it worked.

Re my daily dosage of 1 x Curcumin and 1 x Boswellia casules. They are still working well. I decided to have a blood test to detect any adverse effects on my kidneys and/or liver, and the results came back that both were normal. I suggest anyone taking either or both of these supplements do the same, say once every 3 to 6 months, just to be sure that these key organs are functioning properly.

Can you just pop in to a pharmacy or whatever and say test my liver or kidneys?
In US, you need a "primary care doctor" to order them.
And in my area, it takes a year to get an appointment with a primary care doctor. Six months for a PA and three for who knows what.

That sounds terrible.
We cannot order a blood test through a pharmacy - well, not yet, anyway - but it is pretty straightforward to arrange through our GP doctor system. An online request for an appointment currently results in a response within a few hours maximum, and is followed up with a date and time within a couple of days of making the request. Depending on how much is already known about the situation a blood test could be organised straightaway, or, if the enquiry is new, then a face to face appointment first with a doctor will most likely be required,
In my recent case, I had a doctor's appointment first, and as I wanted to give time for the supplements to become established, I was allowed to arrange my blood test to take place six weeks later. If I had wanted one within a few days time, that would equally have been possible.
Overall, I have found our health system to be pretty good, although I know that with certain conditions resources are stretched and delays then do occur. It can happen with operations like a hip replacement, and even with certain types of cancer treatment - that in particular is not good.
