Clockwork radios

Unusual for a government to recommend such an acquisition, and not just for a radio, but also for food, water and  materials to keep warm (clothing, blankets and the like) and add to that a decent sum of money. Enough of everything  to cater for needs extending to at least 3 days

The reason given behind this is the escalating bad weather that is forecast to batter or island ths winter.Power cuys and transport disruption feature as likely consequences. I hope this is the ireason, although the prospect of Russian aggression towards Europe that the likes of Trump and Musk see as presenting unique business opportunityies cannot be dismissed out of hand.

Strange and dangerous times

Articles I’ve read here include short term logistical interruptions due to hackers and the beginning of your Defense Minister’s 1,000 day prep for war plan.

Re: Clockwork radios

A 3-day war would be extremely unlikely.

The UK has a programme to increase our defences as part of an overall NATO commitment to do so - something that reflects Trump's positions regarding Europe and Putin, alongside Putin's declaration that he is ready for war with Europe. Our people stocking up significantly will form a part of that programme, but, even today, our defence scretary has emphasised that the 3-day instruction was more to do with outages expected as a result of the rapidly changing weather patterns - increased flooding, droughts, wildfires, that have already seen areas of the UK affected.

This year's El Nino is producing noticeably higher ocean surface temperatures, stoked by overall human-driven global warming and the resultant change in climate. Predictions are that 2027 will see even greater and stronger incidents of flooding, droughts and wildfires, so the 3-day stocking is linked more to this, although the longer-term need for households to increase supplies of essential goods has to be a part of the overall defence programme.

It reminds me of the desire to create nuclear bomb shelters during the early 60s when Kruschev governed the USSR, and we saw the Bay of Pigs and Cuban missile crisis create tensions and the prospect of WW3. Looks like we have a similar situation now with Putin and Ukraine, but with currently a less intentioned US government to be involved

Re: Clockwork radios

From Britain's Independent:

Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is prepared ‌for a potential war with Europe in his latest sabre-rattling threat against the continent, though ‌he claimed Moscow does not ‌want one.

The reasons why were blatantly obvious when Zelensky gave a speech to the joint session of Congress in Washington.  The Republicans sat on the hands when Zelensky stated obvious facts.  Democrats and independents stood up and applauded.  Trump has done what is necessary so that Putin is encouraged.

We know Putin has ten year plans for who will be invaded.  The next attack appears to be on Latvia.  Since he has finished rebuilding his based in that area.  And is currently building more new ones on the borders of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania.

His previous threat to Europe was about Kaliningrad.  He did something that was never done before.  He threatened to use nuclear weapons.  He again, this week, threatened to attack Europe.  Using the bogus accusation that Europe was planning to attack Russia.

Hitler was constantly encouraged when western nations did not confront him.  He move the army into the Rhineland.  He even told Generals to withdraw if other nations responded to that major violation.  Other nations did what Trump is doing today.  They encourage Hitler by not confronting him up front.

Trump is doing even worse.  He withdrew Starshield and Starlink access.  Then even denied it.  So that Russian defeats in the Ukraine war ended.  Trump has always been a Putin admirer even back when the Miss Universe pageant was in Moscow.    Trump's condemning American allies is repeatedly demonstrated.  Even here.

And here:

Of course, China and Russian have both cheered Trump's run for president.  After all, Trump said in Helsinki that he did not believe all American intelligence agencies and his National Security adviser Dan Coates.  Because Putin told him it was not true.  Trump then said, in that internationally broadcast news conference, that he believe Putin over all American intelligence agencies.

Right wing extremists somehow believe that is good.

Re: Clockwork radios

Scary how many Americans have always been so naive and therefore anti-American as to not see what Trump has always been; even decades before he ran for President.  How many times must he (and his wacko supporters) demonstrate contempt for America.   Hegseth just fired another top general - head of military planning.  After having fired the previous one last year.  Massively fired many other top generals and admirals. Because, among other facts, they do not believe in "Pearl Harboring" other nations.   Then obstructed the promotion most black and women to general and admiral rank.  Because he has a long history of being both sexist and racist.  Like Trump.

Stalin did similar military purges.  As a result, the Russian army was mauled when they tried to "Pearl Harbor" Finland.  And again when Hitler took full advantage.  He also killed many military intelligence officers who accurately warned what was obvious.

Today, Trump supporters announced that Democrats are communist supporters of Putin.  VP Vance, House Speaker Johnson, and Trump have constantly made those accusations.  Since it works on the many who make decisions from emotions.  Who ignore facts.

How many were so brainwashed by obvious lies about Saddam's WMDs?  How many intentionally ignore facts?  An anti-American even praised Putin in Helsinki.  How many ignored that reality.  Make decisions only from their emotions.  Making war inevitable.

Facts said Saddam did not have WMDs.  Facts also say Putin and Xi are routinely manipulating Trump.  They know how to play to his ego.

Having 3 days worth of necessities isn’t tied to the duration of a calamity whether it’s an attack or natural disaster. If one can survive the first 3 days on their own, other resources will often begin to become available in modern times. That also makes it the starting point on which to build for extended self sufficiency planning while keeping people in their comfort zones for now.

So, if Putin creates a nuclear winter to counteract global warming, it would be a kindness! You wouldn’t have to spend your money on stocking up and could put it towards entertainment.

Re: Clockwork radios

In a nuclear winter, an obstructed sun means crops do not grow.  Famine can exist.  But no problem.  With so many people. then cannibalism is the simple solution.

Grocery store chains in at least three European countries reported unexpected temperature spikes Monday in refrigerators and freezers that ruined food — the second time in less than a month that similar incidents have raised concerns about cyberattacks on increasingly interlinked infrastructure…
