that last post should have read 24 hours, not 4 ;P
He's still in - and likely to be for a few more days but all the signs are still good.
They're taking no chances

Oh man, I envy you, getting to watch it for the first time. Make sure you have no distractions when you watch the last episode of season 1. It is a fucking doozy.
oh it's a quiet house type of watch all the way through so far. looking forward to the finale. I'm on ep 5 now. I love everything about it. it's so atmospheric.

thanks guys. I appreciate the support.
He's back in hospital with an infection, but looks like they have caught it in time to avoid anything major. they're keeping him in on a drip for 2 hours then will reassess but so far so good.

Wow it is good if a bit unsettling.

i called this an update, but i cant remember how much of this i talked about when i mentioned the situation in an unrelated thread
It's been such a strange few months. Every now and again the enormity of what he has been through and is going through hits me full force and it takes my breath away for a moment. Sometimes, i just get this flash of an image - him in the hospital, the look in his eyes, or the way his face used to look, his familiar quirks and mannerisms. Sometimes it sets off a mini-panic attack. Sometimes it just breaks my heart.
He's still here though - he's still him. As bad as this shit show has been it could have been so much worse.

Well - we're nearing the halfway point to this year and i can honestly say 2025 has not been kind thus far.
On the plus side - he is alive, recovering, doesn't need a kidney transplant (was a real concern at one point) and his dominant, left hand is the one affected the least: he has lost one finger and a couple of finger tips on his left I think. Also - he has been left with a few toe stumps which means he should eventually be able to manage with ordinary footwear with an insert rather than the giant balance boots (currently he's in giant neoprene protective balance boots that fit over the bandages)
He's been able to go outside in the garden for short spells, when the weather was warm.
His hand exercises are going well - he is able to do more - though the sensitivity in his skin is making that hard work
He has more days now where he is engaged in the conversation and watching tv shows and just generally more involved. Overall he seems in relatively good spirits most times i see him. He has put up a decent show of being ok most of the time since he got out of intensive care, even when he was still on the high dependency ward, but it's less forced now i think. in the hospital it was almost a feverish humour - now a bit more like his usual dark humour
On the not so plus side - he's pretty much down to stumps on his right hand, with i think just one mostly intact finger, but that finger was bending wrong so the joint has been affected at some point.
- He's looking at probably a year of several reconstructive surgeries to deal with the damage to his nose, lips and palate.
He's still on heavy duty painkillers, antibiotics and other meds.
He's having to retrain the nerves in his skin because they're jangling at every change in temperature, or air flow or contact with new textures etc.
Eating and drinking is hard for him - and also just generally, most of the time he has to wear a napkin or tissue pressed against his mouth to stop from drool

Fun fact I learned the other day: nearly all of the developed nations that have single-payer healthcare instituted those systems in the 1930s as a response to the Great Depression. The US government attempted to do it back then, too, and the key reason they couldn't get it through was that it would have created racially-integrated hospitals. Bigots were so determined to avoid sharing a building with a black person--or being a white doctor forced to treat black patients--that they killed a program they otherwise were widely in favor of.

the Audible app is doing my head in. the most recent update has left it so unstable. so annoying whne you are totally immersed in the story and then it goes silent.

it's been an interesting couple of years - in the chinese proverb sense of the word. This year started in the worst way** but i think it bottomed out my stress and depression, and threw things into perspective, so hopefully i can be a bit more present in my life - including reconnecting here.
** short version - my bro got an accidental bite rough housing with their dog and had a rare reaction to the bacteria, sepsis and system wide micro clotting. several weeks in intensive care and didnt think he'd make it. now recovering, but long road of rehab and plastic surgery ahead.

Thanks all
Update - he has been back to vets another 3 times and ended up having to be sedated a second time because more nails detached. Turns out he has some sort of issue with his nails rather than him having just accidentally banged his foot.
All in all he has had 4 nails removed, including both dew claws, with 3 feet affected.
Up to Weds he had 3 bandaged feet. He now has no bandages but is wearing a cone. His front paw is very swollen, one of the claws is infected and he is on antibiotics and painkillers
Vet thinks it may be an autoimmune condition - there's a food supplement that is usually pretty good at strengthening the nails and I have ordered some.
Poor lad is feeling very sorry for himself and I am frikken exhausted lol

Carrot had a toenail hanging off - too attached to just remove it - sooooo sedation it had to be. Had to leave work to take him to the vets initially in the afternoon, 2 hours of emergency holiday then left him there came back home and logged back into work, then took another emergency 1 hour holiday at 6pm to go pick him up and then get back and log in for the final hour of my shift.
I mean, thank fuck I currently work mainly from home only going in for one day a week at the office, and also that he has insurance but cold have really done without the £160 excess and copay and having to put a bag over the bandage to keep it dry every time he goes out for the next 3 days,
Poor baby - he is so woozy.
