Human social conventions are nebulous and not defined by strict logic, so anyone looking for "a list of what I'm allowed to say" is not even in the right ball field. I can just tell you that "blacks" sounds like something Archie Bunker would say. It sounds objectifying, and reductive. It doesn't pass the "cringe-meter"
Different people will have a different cringe-meter. This is why we say of people, "he's from a different time," or judge older artistic works on a sliding scale of social cohesion.
I think the goal is, if a group of 'people who are different from me' communicate their perspective, on a subject which I have no experience, I add it to a list of things I try to remember, out of basic common courtesy. For the same reason, I trust mathematicians or other experts who are more knowledgeable than me in a particular subject. To not do so, is to be a person driving the wrong way down the highway, and getting mad that people are honking.
Well said, Flint!
Philosophy » Specialness Spiral » 12/05/2023 5:25 am |
I'm trying to use the "special" stuff. We used to keep the fancy crystal glasses that were a wedding gift from my MiL for birthdays, festivals and other celebrations. We now use them every weekend. But we need to up our drinking game as we're only using the red wine glasses (and have broken two in 18 years of marriage) and champagne flutes, but we also have whisky glasses, highball glasses, brandy balloons, port/sherry glasses (six of each). We have no-one to leave this shit to, after all.
Same with "special" clothes - I've only got a limited amount of time left to enjoy wearing them so I should just wear them!

It would seem so. For the record, I'm not familiar with it, either.

I've worked from home for years, but now I go out on interpreting assignments a couple of days a week or so. I try always to take a packed lunch and it's almost always the same thing: a (cruncheh!) peanut butter and cheese sandwich, a few tiny tomatoes, a box of dried fruit and nuts and a bottle of water. Sounds dull but I like it, I don't have to think/make decisions and it's quick to put together. Now that winter is here I've bought a chubby flask and may sometimes take some homemade soup. I did the buy-a-sandwich thing for many years when I worked in an office in London, and I really don't relish (see what I did there?!) returning to it.

So, I guess that's how you keep your parents alive in you. You give attention to how you figure they would react to your action.
Would they be proud of you?
Yes, this is my touchstone now. This is how I still feel their love - that I know they'd be proud of what I'm doing.

I’m not retired yet. But I have gotten rather blasé about the date. Maybe this will prompt me to pay better attention. ;)
That's not what I find ... When I am logged in on a PC on this page there are two things I can click to see what's been going on since my last visit: "active topics" at top right-ish, and "active topics" below the list of boards. YMMV.
